I worked a bit more on my collage today, taking the advice of my friends in the comments below yesterday's post :)
I'm still not quite satisfied because it doesn't look balanced -- but I like it better.
Any more suggestions? Or should I leave it and chock it up to a process piece (as opposed to a satisfying product)? I do like my birdies -- though the one on the right is a bit too Spidermanish in colour ;) (Unfortunately, the photo doesn't show the silver highlights on the birds and leaves. I outlined all the black lines with silver gel pen, which adds a neat effect.)
Now it is time to rest.
Ok, I'm not an artist by any means. In fact, you and I both know I'm far from it. I think it looks better...but...my untrained eye says the problem is that the background is warm colours and the birds are in the cooler colour category. Of course, you can do nothing about that but since it's not looking right, I'd consider maybe, just maybe, that's it???? Chime in all the artists here and tell me I'm wrong!!! It's ok!!!! :) xoxo
ReplyDeleteFirst of all -- you ARE an artist. Those birds and other felt ornaments that you make are gorgeous! (In fact, in your spare time this summer . . . There's still a spot on my bed for a little piece of you;) And those little bottles you brought me yesterday -- adorable! So just give in to the creative you! :) As for my collage -- I think you might be on to something. The background doesn't suit in colour, though I like the texture and lines from the sewing pattern. I COULD always add a layer of paint on top -- maybe even a wash all over. Hmmmmmm . . .
DeleteLove you. And yes, I know exactly what to make you. And it's going to be really big and gaudy and you're gonna have to hang it in your room for at least a year. ;) lol!!!
ReplyDeleteI love it ,except for two thing: I agree about the SpiderMan bird (maybe change his color?) and while I like the IDEA of the nest, it is kind of dark/heavy and therefore drags your eyes right to it. Can you lighten it up somehow? I LOVE LOVE LOVE the background texture & color. Can you tell us heat you used to create it?
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile -a huge THANK YOU coming your way - I adore my little gifts and will be thanking you more thoroughly in a blog post so be sure to keep watch for it! You are truly amazing!
I agree, Phyl, about the colours and the nest :) The background was just an old canvas my daughter had painted on, and I podged some layers of sewing patterns on top. The colours she used peek through.
DeleteI'm so glad your little gifts arrived! I hope they arrived in good shape! I was worried about the glue on the dragon fly.
This is really coming together. The difference in color temperature between the background and the birds doesn't bother me at all, but I agree that the darkness of the nest draws the eye away. Perhaps a couple of eggs in it would lighten it up a bit. I do like the balance of the elements in the collage.

Eggs! I like that idea :) Thank you, Vicki.
Deletei would let it 'sit' and come back to it ~ you will then know what to do ~ trust your own muse ~~ thanks, ^_^ ( A Creative Harbor)
ReplyDeleteThat's good advice :)
DeleteHi my friend :o) I think your collage is looking great! I love the texture. What I like to do with my art when a picture or something looks to bright or just isn't blending the way I want. I will either paint over the top of the images with a diluted brown and then right before it dries, I wipe the paint and kind of blend it in to break down the brightness or I will dip the images into some walnut ink before hand so the contrast isn't so different. You could actually use any watered down color over the top then seal it with some glue. I hope that makes sense.
ReplyDeleteYou're doing a great job on it, I see where you're using images to pull colors from the background. Again, great texture. Texture is my favorite thing on an art piece. In the stores, I find myself touching all the clothes to feel the texture.
Thank you for visiting my blog and your always kind and encouraging words of my art. You're a blessing and inspiration to me. Hugs to you.
